April Newsletter

All our workshops are fully booked – Yes, April Fool.

Sorry I couldn’t help it, but please read on as March has been pretty busy and there’s also lots going on in April.

News

We were delighted to be invited to the private unveiling of Anne Schegmann’s installation at Colchester Hospital. The piece is tremendously moving, with a Martin Newell poem running through it, dedicated to organ donation. ‘The Wave’ depicts the Essex coastline and features the High Lighthouse in Harwich. Anne’s talent, sensitivity and humour is demonstrated in this stunning piece of work; it could be a silver lining if you have to visit Turner Road Hospital.

Anne delivered a great workshop for us in February and will be returning in the autumn.

Bev can paint hares – or at least a hare

Last month we had the pleasure of welcoming well known watercolour artist and illustrator, Jake Winkle to The Bank and what a lovely full class we had. Everyone achieved, even complete beginners, a testament to Jake’s talent, patience and professional approach. We still have a few spaces left on his ‘A Walk on the Wild Side’ in July – watercolour, all abilities welcome, Giraffes I think and a surprise!

Exhilerating Acrylics with the lovely Hash

We had our usual amazing day with the ever popular Hashim Akib last weekend. Sadly, really sadly Hash has informed us that he will not be doing any workshops for ‘art schools’ next year. I tried everything to change his mind, but he is a very busy man and is going on to bigger and better things. I have the feeling you may all be seeing a lot more of him in the future – possibly in your living rooms. Good news though, he is already booked to come again this year on Saturday 2nd September and there are places available as I speak. If big, bold acrylic appeals to you, on the following day the equally impressive Marie Antoniou is tutoring with the theme of ‘Contemporary Pet Portraits’.

Nigel’s attempt with Hash on the Day
His other go using Hash’s photo reference, but with a bit more time to do it. He was quite pleased.

Chris Forsey interview

In a similar vein, Chris Forsey uses Acrylic paint and other water based media to stunning effect in is own abstract impressionist way. This month a six page feature in the new Paint and Draw magazine gives a real insight into the man and his methods. The revelation that, after a lot of planning in his head, he works in a real mess and uses any equipment or materials he has to hand to get the desired effect, should inspire all of us – better get the table protectors on when he comes in July!

Lastly

When I’m not: teaching people how to make cushions, attending our workshops, making tea and food, or doing admin. I am looking out for new tutors and developing my own workshops. This is a little peak of something coming up
Also if any of you have a burning desire to learn a specific craft or have been inspired by an amazing tutor, perhaps you can let me know.

Happy Spring and a very chocolatety Easter.
