Magpie aka Margaret Pie immortalised in felt by the fantastically talented Rosie MacRae. Perfectly Maggie right down to her three legged hopping and her facial expression – thank you so much Rosie.

A time for  Printing, Stitching, Weaving and Art.

Autumn is officially here now and with more “indoor time” I always think it’s a good time to start a new project. So with that in mind here’s a brief round up of what’s been going on in the studios of late and what’s coming up; it might just get your creative juices flowing.

What we’ve been up to.

We have had a terrific month and enjoyed meeting a couple of new tutors to The Bank.

Everyone had a marvellous day with the very talented Jo Hammond and 12 delightful sitting hares were produced; one of which became a Birthday present for my Mum on her special Birthday, she won’t thank me for telling you how old, but I’m sure if you wanted to you could work it out!!!!

We also had the first visit from highly acclaimed, author, tutor and artist Alison Holt, I managed to get a bit of stitching in myself, there has to be some perks of the job. The weekend was remarkable and everyone produced pieces to be very proud of; I would also like to congratulate Alison on having a piece of her work accepted in to The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, so good to see machine embroidery recognised as an art medium. The down side is she is in such demand Alison won’t be back until 2020, well I’m working on her.

Machine embroidery and textile art

We had two session this month, had some great fun and hopefully learnt a bit too, so I thought I’d include a couple of pics.

Lino printing.

This has reached a unprecedented level of popularity and we are really lucky to have Helen Maxfield teaching.

Testimonial
“Excellent course! Helen is so gentle, knowledgeable, encouraging, influsterable…….! Food and hospitality as fab as ever”.

Her next one day workshop is full, however, for all those reasons and due to demand, we have added an extra day, but it is filling fast, especially because of the Xmas card element.

Brin Edwards

Brin has been a regular here since we started and we’re really looking forward to welcoming him back in November. He represents birds and other wildlife; capturing them and their habitats in his unique style. His clever use of colour expresses the light beautifully – often dramatically – describing the atmosphere, the weather, the season; whilst his brush strokes add life and drama .
Sharing in Brin’s passion for his subject and his process is an experience not to be missed, his class is suitable for beginners as well as those who paint regularly; everyone will gain from this gentle, informative day with lots of individual attention. We have painted a lot of bird subjects over the years, but inspired by seeing his paintings of seals and hares I have decided to include mammals this time round; you just need to bring our own reference or arrange it with us in advance. If you are a complete beginner you can also arrange to use our paints and brushes, just let me know.

Sanctuary and Surrender

I made mention of this last time and now we have a few more details. There is to be an exhibition held at the Pier Hotel, Harwich of watercolours connected to the surrender of 120 German U Boats; produced by war artists at the end of the First World War. The exhibition will be open to the public, but there will also be the opportunity to sign up for a viewing followed by a workshop delivered by Angenita Hardy-Teekens. The organisers will be using our studios on Wednesday 21st November for this free event which will be open to anyone who would like to get involved. The workshop is intended as the creative ‘spring board’ for participants to then go away and produce work to be shown in an exhibition to be held at Old Bank Studios from Friday 24th to Sunday 29th May 2019
On Wednesday 28th November, they will be using our studios for the launch of a textile project to commemorate the Kindertransport during WWII. Again, this event will be open to anybody who would like to get involved.
