This Beginners’ Linocut workshop will introduce you to the materials and safe use of tools, before moving on to design and produce your own one colour print.

When it comes to the design, the choice is yours. Using your own reference photo or sketch, Helen will help you to create a design that works; explaining how to simplify whilst enhancing the essence of the subject.

About the Artist

Helen creates limited edition handmade linocuts from her studio at the end of her garden. Her designs evolve from observational drawings and photos from her trips out in the countryside and along the coastline. She looks for textures in the landscape and enjoys devising ways to render them through linocut. She uses the ‘reduction method’ where one piece of lino is used for the entire print and the picture is built up through layers of ink, with more lino being carved away between each layer. Helen makes images that celebrate both the beauty of the landscape and the natural qualities of linocut.

What you will need to bring

All materials and equipment are included.

Template designs are available, or you can bring along your own reference photos, magazine pictures and create your own design. Just bear in mind you will be aiming to complete a finished print in a day and you will need to simplify your images into a linocut design.
