Two day course Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May
Follow the line
Using a range of collage, print, stitch and experimental mark-making techniques we will create mixed media pieces on both fabric and paper, including wrapping and stuffed small 3D structures.
Taking simple lines and shapes seen in nature as a starting point you will create a range of surfaces using these visual prompts to make a series of compositions. These could be developed into a concertina or stitched book or saved as a series of samples.
No previous experience is necessary but do bring along collected papers, scrap fabrics, threads and found treasures to inspire your work. It will be an industrious 2 days, you’ll need an apron as we may get messy.
This is a perfect weekend if you would like to learn some of Julia’s amazing wrapping and textural techniques, also including some design and making your samples in to little concertina books.
Includes homemade lunch and refreshments both days
About the Tutor
Julia Wright is drawn to weathered, organic, irregular forms and the repetition of simple shapes, like clusters of barnacles, knotted tree roots and growth patterns of lichen. Her mixed media textiles pieces suggest fragments of landscape without being figurative. 3D techniques such as wire work and shaped metal forms add delicate details, simple organic structures and focal points within stitched textural compositions.
Julia trained in Applied Design at Edinburgh College of Art and has been teaching Textiles and exhibiting her work for over 20 years. Now based in Manchester, England, she records inspiration, through drawing, photography, sampling and creating sketchbooks.
