Julia Wright - Landscape Treasures, textile art

Two day course

Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May

Discover the creative potential of textiles in this hands-on, experimental workshop. Participants will explore a range of fabric manipulation techniques, including wrapping, binding, hand-stitching, and embroidery, to create richly tactile 2D and 3D pieces.

Working with a thoughtfully curated selection of found, recycled, and hand-dyed fabrics, you will investigate how colour, shape, structure, and texture can be inspired by the landscape and natural forms. Through guided exercises and playful experimentation, you’ll learn how to transform simple materials into expressive textile artworks.

We will also discuss compositional ideas, enabling you to begin developing a more resolved and cohesive final piece. This workshop is designed to be open and accessible—no previous experience is required. Whether you’re new to textiles or looking to expand your creative practice, you’ll leave with new skills, fresh inspiration, and a collection of uniquely crafted samples.

Includes Refreshments

About the Tutor

Julia Wright is drawn to weathered, organic, irregular forms and the repetition of simple shapes, like clusters of barnacles, knotted tree roots and growth patterns of lichen. Her mixed media textiles pieces suggest fragments of landscape without being figurative. 3D techniques such as wire work and shaped metal forms add delicate details, simple organic structures and focal points within stitched textural compositions.
Julia trained in Applied Design at Edinburgh College of Art and has been teaching Textiles and exhibiting her work for over 20 years. Now based in Manchester, England, she records inspiration, through drawing, photography, sampling and creating sketchbooks.
