1pm to 4pm every Thursday for 6 weeks, starting 8th September
This 6 week course of three hour sessions is suitable for absolute beginners. You will make a lap quilt/sofa throw approx. size 45-48” x 60-64”. The illustration above is for guidance only; your own quilt will look very different reflecting your colour/ fabric choices and combinations.
What you will need to bring
For the quilt top: 12 co-ordinating fat quarters., 100% craft cotton. A fat quarter is approx 22” x 19” and available from any reputable patchwork and quilting shop or online store.
For the quilt backing: a single piece min 52” x 68”. Unless you can source a wide backing, it will be necessary to piece the backing from standard width fabric so, min 3m x 42-45” 100% cotton fabric.
Wadding: min 52” x 68”. Please buy a quilt wadding/batting, e.g. 100% cotton or 80% cotton/20% polyester. Do not buy a synthetic wadding or a furnishing wadding.
For the quilt binding (to finish the edges): 0.75m of a co-ordinating fabric, 100% craft cotton. • For piecing the quilt top, machine sewing thread to match your fabric choices, or a neutral.
For machine quilting: a machine sewing thread (for the bobbin) to match your chosen quilt backing fabric and another (for the top) to blend with your blocks.
Specialist equipment: 1/4” piecing foot Walking foot Fabric marker Quilt pins (the curved, safety pin variety) Masking tape (for basting your quilt) Hand sewing kit – to include pins, needles, snips, unpicker.
Timetable
Week 1 – preparing your fabrics, rotary cutting technique, cutting out, block design
Week 2 – piecing the 12 individual blocks, squaring the blocks
Week 3 – deciding layout, joining the blocks into the quilt top
Week 4 – quilt sandwich, make binding strip
Week 5 – make label, quilting
Week 6 – squaring quilt, attach binding, label and hand finish.
