Nigel Caleno - Introduction to Plein Air Painting in Oils

This workshop is designed for those with some oil painting experience who would like to explore working outside. Painting en plein air (outside from life) forces you to see and work differently; bringing a new dynamic to your work.

The course will begin in the studio with a demonstration of some of the different equipment that can be used outside, exploring: practicality, portability and affordability. There will be a range of different easel setups to look at and later use, which will help you to decide what would be the most suitable for you should you want to buy or make equipment in the future.

Next we will discuss the practicalities of working outside, including weather, changing conditions, the effects on materials, etc.

The remainder of the time will be devoted to painting, one or two short demos and lots of one to one tuition and advice. We won’t stray too far from the studio as we have many varied options for painting all around us.

Includes homemade lunch and refreshments

About the tutor

Nigel studied art at two local art colleges in the 1980’s in range of disciplines. Travel, a career and raising a family over the next thirty something years got in the way of pursuing artistic endeavours in a meaningful way until, along with wife Bev, starting Old Bank Studios. Since becoming fully involved in the business he has started to draw and paint again, with a strong leaning towards working in oils and painting en plein air. Nigel now sells his work and to date has had two very successful joint Summer Exhibitions with Bev at the Old Bank.
