Harwich Hot Spot – Visit the Vault

Harwich Festival of Arts 25th June to 5th July

Hello everyone,
I can’t believe it’s June already – can someone please tell the weather – and the festival is almost upon us.
Spring has been a busy time at the Bank, with some exceptional workshops and courses tutored by some wonderful artists, all of which filled to capacity.
Our first visit by Soraya French focussing on mixed media was a great success, with students producing some beautifully colourful pieces; the studio was awash with paint, inks, tissue, gold and more and the results were stunning.
We also had the privilege of welcoming HaideeJo Summers back, this time for a whole weekend. Both classes had a range of different abilities and with equal amounts of attention from Haidee, everyone produced work that they were proud of. We have already booked her again for May 2016 when students will venture outside for some en plein air painting. I think this will be very popular, with some places already booked.
Colourful textured landscapes inspired by Soraya French.
Haidee’s completed demo piece which survived the best efforts of a very clumsy individual who will remain nameless – NIGEL.
What’s coming up?
As well as all the art and textile workshops and courses which have been mentioned in previous newsletters and have been on the website a while, there are a few new additions:
Recently offered is “The Art of Wet Felting” with Jeanette Trim. The clue is in the title – learn all about the process and make a scarf and maybe some flower broaches. Unfortunately, as I write this there is only one space left, so you will need to be quick if you want to attend. We will however, try to run it again in the autumn – watch this space.
The Essex coastline with its’ many estuaries and a history of coastal shipping has long been a subject for artists. On Saturday 29th August you can join William Newton, who has been capturing this theme in watercolour for all his painting years.
For complete beginners, those in need of a refresher or painters wanting to try a new medium this could be for you. A short 6 week course“Brush Up on your Watercolour and Drawing Skills” with Lavinia Hamer. On Wednesday evenings Lavinia, a tutor with many years experience, will teach you valuable skills starting with the basics. Don’t be afraid this is a great opportunity to get started.
Also for beginners and those new to the medium we are offering an “Introduction to Oil Painting”one day workshop on Sunday 16th August. Working on a simple still life you can learn all about the medium and essentials such as colour mixing. No drawing skill is necessary – it’s all about the paint.
The Festival
We will be having a short break from art workshops while we host the main Visual Arts Exhibition for the Harwich Festival. Unfortunately, Nigel and I can’t be there for the opening evening on Wednesday 24th June, but members of the festival committee will be on hand to show you around and offer you refreshments. We will be attending our son’s graduation from Durham university on the day, but we will be around after that and hope to meet up with some of you then.

The Vault
Whilst the exhibition will be taking over virtually all our space, we have managed to hold on to the Vault. In here we will have our own little show featuring students work and details of forthcoming events. Again we would love to see you, so if you are in Harwich pop in for a catch up and you might even get a cup of tea.

All the best

Bev
